As you all know, I’ve been on a severe quitting streak around here as I recently discussed my grievances about different games I was playing in various articles.
I started and to my surprise actually finished my journey from where I left off, in Mass Effect, a game that released in 2007, 17 years ago…
So, I had to ask myself, why was I having more fun with a 17 year old game compared to the newer ones like GreedFall, Asterigos: Curse of the Stars, and Black Myth: Wukong.
I mentioned the many, MANY, faults, that make you literally want to stop playing, in all three of the games I mentioned above, but why has this time been so different?
Mass Effect is closest in similarity to GreedFall, so why did I want to snap the latter’s disc in half?
First off, I didn’t have to run 20+ minutes to get somewhere in Mass Effect. Maps seem big, but when you were on foot it was actually compact, actually achievable to run through in a decent amount of time, backtracking was minimal, and add the fun of defeating enemies that don’t respawn every second on easy mode, combined with the story, honestly low key makes the game verge on the tail end of a masterpiece.
The only issues I had with the game was the lack of direction markers, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as Asterigos: Curse of the Stars and Black Myth: Wukong because the maps didn’t randomly wrap around. Other issues were, having to press two buttons to pull up the map, and the unnecessary long driving sections, but for some reason that didn’t annoy me enough to drop the game like the others.
Maybe the fight with Saren and Sovereign just captured my attention more.
Literally the absolute best scene in the entire game was near the end when Shepard and Wrex started talking about the genophage facility,
“How can you not see what this means to the Krogan…” – Wrex (2007)
The scene literally shocked me, and the MUSIC, rest in peace my friend…
