Ghost Studios: Game Awards (2023)

Scarlet Nexus
Yuito Sumeragi I – Scarlet Nexus (January 7, 2023)

It’s here, my first ever personal Game Awards!

Officially named the Ghost Studios: Game Awards, the contenders just consist of what games I completed this year. Completed: Defined as the beginning of the story to the end of the story.

And of course, yours truly will be picking one from my Top 3 favorites for Game of the Year.

The reason I’m doing my own little show is because I finally have my own website to do whatever I want and like many others no one can play every new game in existence, whether due to time or because we finally decided to play a game we bought 5 years ago.

So, here is what I got my hands on this year and the date of completion.

Game Completion List (PC) (2023)

1. Final Fantasy XV (Replay) (January 4, 2023)
2. Scarlet Nexus (January 13, 2023)
3. Devil May Cry 5 (March 22, 2023)
4. Yakuza 3: Remastered (March 28, 2023)
5. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order (March 31, 2023)
6. Code Vein (April 9, 2023)
7. Yakuza 4: Remastered (April 15, 2023)
8. Yakuza 5: Remastered (April 21, 2023)

10. Quantum Break (Replay) (July 6, 2023)
11. Grand Theft Auto V (Replay) (July 10, 2023)
12. Kena: Bridge of Spirits (August 3, 2023)
13. Mortal Kombat 1 (September 24, 2023)
14. Dead or Alive 6 (October 8, 2023)
15. Marvel’s Avengers (October 10, 2023)
16. Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections (November 19, 2023)

And because I’m a small time Creator here are the 5 categories I’m doing for 2023!

Worst Game of the Year
Best Music
Best Gacha Game
Most Wanted
Game of the Year

Worst Game of the Year

Marvel’s Avengers

Official Release: September 4, 2020

Marvel’s Avengers
Hawkeye – Marvel’s Avengers (October 12, 2023)

What!? I know what you’re thinking, after all I said recently about Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections you’d think I’d definitely pick that as the worst game of the year, but Marvel’s Avengers had them beat.

I bought the game before it was delisted and played through the story. While the story is not bad in general the match times were ungodly. I was begging for the match to end as enemies just keep coming and coming and that happened multiple times during the game.

I just couldn’t forgive it… Thus it’s the Ghost Studios: Worst Game of the Year!

Best Music

Code Vein

Official Release: September 27, 2019

Code Vein
KioGhostV – Code Vein (March 31, 2023)

This honestly was a tough choice, but I had to go with Code Vein because of how one of the best saddest songs I heard was implemented.

Vestiges are pieces of memories in the game that tells a section of that person’s story and the song that plays during them is the absolute best.

The song is called Memories of the Lost by many on YouTube and the multiple variations you hear over the course of the game, tugs at your heartstrings while piecing together a story that you know eventually leads to death for most…

Best Gacha Game

Honkai: Star Rail

Official Release: April 26, 2023

Honkai: Star Rail
Cocolia, Mother of Deception (Story) – Honkai: Star Rail (May 18, 2023)

I haven’t played Honkai: Star Rail in a few months, but I played and talked about so much this year that I had no choice, but to make a gacha category just for it. Yes it has faults due to its gacha nature, but the game is one of the best newest games I’ve played.

Between Marvel’s Snap and Code Vein it could have won the Best Music category, but Code Vein grabbed my heart too much.

I’ve written various articles about Star Rail. Not as many as I would have liked to, because my writing journey wasn’t started during the majority of my playthrough.

In my Cocolia, Mother of Deception article I said it was the best boss of the year and I stand by that. You could play the game up til that point and never pick it up again because the battle was so good…

Most Wanted

Hogwarts Legacy

Official Release: February 10, 2023

Hogwarts Legacy
Avada Kedavra – Image Source: Hogwarts Legacy State of Play (March 17, 2022)

Oh boy, people were mad up in arms over this game… It also didn’t even get a single nomination at the official Game Awards which is sad… Despite all that, Hogwarts Legacy has made over 1 billion dollars.

I don’t remember what I was doing, but I somewhat went off the grid in February, but one of these days I plan to play this game whether it be tomorrow or in another 5 years as it’s my Most Wanted!

Game of the Year (Top 3 Contenders)

#3: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Official Release: December 8, 2016

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Tsuneo Iwami – Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (June 20, 2023)

Originally supposed to be Kiryu’s last ride, he has a lot on his plate as he’s on the hunt for whoever put Haruka in the hospital and the missing father of her new child.

While not the best entry in the series, that belongs to Yakuza Kiwami, it still keeps you interested enough to playthrough to the end for answers.

#2: Mortal Kombat 1

Official Release: September 19, 2023

Mortal Kombat 1
Mileena VS Kitana – Mortal Kombat 1 (September 14, 2023)

Despite its various unethical monetization practices as of late, Mortal Kombat 1, does have solid gameplay that’s too good to ignore and though its story wasn’t as good as previous games in the series, it still competes with the best.

#1: Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Official Release: September 21, 2021

Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Corrupted Taro – Kena: Bridge of Spirits (July 30, 2023)

Kena: Bridge of Spirits, about the tale of a girl and her run-ins with various spirits, is an absolute masterpiece!

From the gameplay, to the music, to the story there was no other choice, but to crown this game as Ghost Studios: Game of the Year!

Winners

Marvel’s Avengers – Worst Game of the Year
Code Vein – Best Music
Honkai: Star Rail – Best Gacha Game
Hogwarts Legacy – Most Wanted
Kena: Bridge of Spirits – Game of the Year
