There’s a new gacha in town and it’s turn-based. Honkai: Star Rail’s success was just too good to leave it be. Now it’s the age of turn-based video games again. It’s like the ice age, it always comes back…
Reverse: 1999 launched October 26, 2023 and jokes aside the game is decent by today’s standards with the staple grind fest that’s in every game under the sun Gacha and Triple A alike, cough Mortal Kombat 1 cough.
1999 does something that Star Rail honestly could learn from. The story mode has a, gasp!? Skip button? Oh my goodness, who would have thought a basic mechanic would make the game more enjoyable, not to offend the people who like to watch 100s of hours of images and text go by. To be honest I’d rather just read the raw script at that point, it’d be 100x quicker.
The gameplay of its turn-based card system is actually fun though and the fact that for most levels you manually play once and can run auto battle on it every time after, which some games desperately need, because you have to run the same level 100s of times, looking at you Genshin.
Despite what I said in various articles, I enjoy some of the gacha elements as if you’re somewhere and have nothing better to do, at least you can waste some time.
My favorite characters so far is Centurion (Beast), my goodness… Sonetto (Mineral), Mondlicht (Mineral) and Sweetheart (Beast).
