WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (Ghost Studios) – Over at Warner Robins City Hall, the future of Perkins Park, located at 105 Mulberry Street, was discussed with community members.
The session started off with residents voting on two different boards, one about necessary amenities for Perkins Park, and the other about where the city should splurge a little.
It continued with 10 various questions with the consensus ultimately wanting a fun and safe park.
As the mic became open for residents, pickleball became one of the popular topics of the day, alongside shade trees, and a variety of other things.
Many in the crowd agreed with one of the residents who said the city should combine the whole 15 acres of Perkins Park by getting rid of Mulberry Street.
Another long-time resident reminisced about how the park used to be. “There’s nothing more beautiful than seeing families fill up that park,” she said. She also said that the city should take examples from other parks that have become popular in recent years.
I caught up with Preston Pooser, Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services Director for Warner Robins, after the meeting and he said tonight was the first step.
“We’re excited about the future of Perkins Park and we’re really happy with the turnout tonight,” said Pooser. “I think we had about 50 people here. We had a lot of great input from everyone and it’s the first step of many towards making Perkins Park that family centered park that everybody wants here in Warner Robins.”
Pooser says the project has been a focus for the Mayor and Council for years and Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda Patrick has been crucial in getting the ball rolling and that renovating the park will strengthen the future downtown area.
“It’s probably a two minute walk from Perkins Park to Commercial Circle,” said Pooser. “So, I think it’s an integral part of it. It’s going to be interwebbed with that experience when people travel to Warner Robins, downtown, to enjoy maybe a place to shop and eat and then come play in the park.”
Pooser also says it was the first of a few input meetings and the University of Georgia is going to help with the initial startup.
The city says renderings for the park should be done later this year.
