Absolute MADNESS! Why are all the NEW and UPCOMING fighting games ASSIST or TAG based?

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls (November 12, 2025)

Let me start by saying I absolutely hate tag based fighting games…

Look, I’m old okay, handling three different characters in a match is just outrageous. The only tag based game that ever got a pass from me was Dragon Ball FighterZ and the reason for that was you actually didn’t have to pick all three characters, you could do old school one on one, just like I like it, though that didn’t apply to the online modes.

In recent years however, it seems every fighting game is trying to copy the wild success of FighterZ and failing miserably in the process with the latest example being Mortal Kombat 1, with its unnecessary, assist based, Kameo system, among other things. The Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Series is another offender of this, but I also give it a pass for the same reason as FighterZ.

2XKO
2XKO (October 14, 2025)

Countless other titles have gone the tag route and faded in obscurity… Another recent title, 2XKO, finally launched after a thousand years as a 3v3 and I gave it a try, but it had no option to do 1v1 whatsoever which was just sad to me. Even in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO you can have five characters on a team, but thank goodness the 1v1 option was there like the others previously mentioned.

The upcoming Invincible VS is also a 3v3 and the upcoming Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, while it seems interesting, is a chaotic 4v4, like what on earth is going on? Is Tekken 8 going to be the last 1v1 fighting game we ever get? Someone, wake me up from this nightmare… At least the upcoming Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game seems to be 1v1 so far.
