I hate it! Hate when game developers basically false advertise, scamming to avoid class action lawsuits, and tricking players for every nickel and dime possible instead of just making something truly great. This is not Wuthering Waves, a great game by the way, where you know it’s a gacha game and it doesn’t secretly hide itself, you know what it is.
Tekken 8, unfortunately, is one of those games that has followed the trickery route and it sucks. The best fighting game of 2024, contender for game of the year, music, gameplay, story, it was all there, it had everything, the developers could do no wrong!
But… Just one year later, that’s not the case anymore… After gamers’ originally made the $70 purchase, you were offered a Season 1 Character Pass, which is apparently industry standard these days, cool, fine, $30… Wait $30?? But, I want the stages too! $40 big ones! For only two stages and four characters, only one of which was a brand new character!! Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy XVI. Eddy Gordo, Lidia Sobieska, and Heihachi Mishima are all characters from Tekken 7, two of which were in the BASE game!!! Let’s not forget either that Lidia was the last DLC character for Tekken 7. If that wasn’t bad enough, a new free story expansion, Episode: Unforgotten Echoes, which is a glorified DLC character showcase, was made in an attempt to market these characters to players who haven’t bought them…
But wait… There’s a Season 2 Character & Stage Pass for another $40! There’s even MORE!! Anna Williams, another character who was also DLC in Tekken 7, kicked off the new pass. It gets even worse!! Fahkumram is the next character in the pass, which is yet another DLC Tekken 7 character!!!
Is this game Tekken 7 or Tekken 8???
It’s not over though! Don’t forget the Tekken Shop was added, cool, we can use in-game currency to buy costumes right? No, you can use real hard earned money to purchase those costumes, despite you already having spent $150 if you purchased the character passes.
It’s STILL not over!! If the Tekken Shop wasn’t bad enough, which I thought was pretty bad when it launched, unfortunately, there is something even more sinister taking place. Get this, Tekken 8 has a Battle Pass now, excuse me, Tekken Fight Pass, you heard me right, Tekken 8 has a BATTLE PASS, in a game that was already $70!!!
You had it, one of the greatest fighting games of all time and you dropped the ball so hard after release with these outrageous unethical monetization practices. Who remembers Tekken Revolution? With the route this game took, Tekken 8 SHOULD have been FREE… My heart is literally in distress just writing such an article…
