I have MIXED feelings – Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout (December 23, 2024)

I wrote an article a few days ago and one of the games I complained about was Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout.

Before I decided to banish the game into the Shadow Realm from my SSD, I gave it another go, since I did have fun in the beginning and according to various sources online I was nearly finished with the game.

First off, I don’t see the appeal of Ryza… It seems like everybody has a better character design than the main crew of characters, Klaudia, Lila, and Emel excluded. I’ve seen monsters with a better design than her, even Agatha’s basic design is 100 times better.

The story has nothing going for it either, the most interesting story in the game is the side quests from Grandma Barbara…

The combat of the game is also ridiculous, like why didn’t they just make it fully turn-based? These active turn-based mechanics have got to stop, this was one of the reasons why Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII did so poorly back in the day. It seems Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may be going this route, I honestly hope not and hope they course correct immediately.

As I said previously, when you have to keep pressing the same button over and over it’s just not going to work. I’m playing a turn-based game, why on earth do I have to press B multiple times to do a basic attack?

Why is there a turn timer? Why are my characters attacking by themselves? Why do I have to pick up everything in the game?

How did this series get a second, let alone a third game? I have many questions with no answers.

Now they did get some things right, like the map is sectioned which I like, you can fast travel literally anywhere which I also like, the game tells you there is a quest in a area, even if you are not in said area, like there is some real good being done here and I admit some elements are there that verge on the edge of fun, but… It never follows through.

Kio, you play fighting games though, aren’t they the same? My friends… Those are fully active in the moment games you literally don’t notice you are doing it because the game is fun. I know that sounds so weird, something being fun right, but when you play a game that has 25% of active mechanics in a supposedly turn-based game, I can’t stress that enough, you notice every and I mean every button press…

And I still haven’t finished the game…
