It was summer of 2005, I was just nine years old, it was a dark and somewhat stormy night. We lived far out in the country and the only ones in the house were me, my brother, our grandmother and all our cousins, so eight people in total.
Grandmother had the bright idea to play a trick on Uncle, Aunt, and Mother since all three were coming home late that night.
Grandfather had recently passed, right there in the house, that winter, so Grandmother starting scheming, got one of the fedora hats and button down shirts he use to wear and dressed up our oldest cousin, with the hat cover the top half of his face, rolled up some printer paper and gave him some matches.
“When you see one of them start coming up to the door, strike that match.” – Grandmother
The first to arrive was Uncle, he had called and Grandmother was faking like the power had went out, we are all looking out the window at this point, he gets about halfway and our cousin strikes the match
“OH, ****!!!” – Uncle
My Uncle took off, I never seen him run so fast in my entire life, he hopped in the car and sped off up the long driveway. I kid you not, we all were dying laughing. It was the funniest thing we ever saw.
He had called back saying someone was on the porch.
“I’m out here right now, there ain’t nobody on this porch.” – Grandmother
She finally revealed we were pranking him and he came back saying we were wrong for that and then joined us himself for the next round.
My Mother and Aunt finally arrive… My Aunt gets about halfway, and our cousin strike another match, she does a double take and screams her way back to the car.
Once again, we are all laughing and they call Grandmother and Uncle, both say nobody is on the porch.
This time my Mother starts walking up with my Aunt close to her back, she has mace in one hand and a knife in the other…
We all rush out the door!
“Whoa! Whoa! It’s me, Aunt! It’s me!!” – Cousin
We all went in laughing, telling the story from the beginning, hearing their points of view and conversations they had in the car. You had to be there, the situation and their reactions were so funny that we all still talk about to this very day.
